Reducing your Dark Spots

Most of us have dark pigmentations on our faces that we want to get rid of. These dark spots for some people are the reason why they have low confidence. But first, let's understand what is a Dark spot.

A Dark Spot is hyperpigmentation on our skin that occurs when certain areas of the skin produce more melanin than usual. Melanin is the one responsible for the color of our skin, eyes, and hair. Melanin also protects our skin from the sun, once our skin has been exposed to the sun the melanocytes increase their production of melanin.

What Causes Dark Spots?

The different reason causes unwanted dark spots like sun exposure, hormonal change, a skincare product that irritates your skin, healing of a wound, certain medications, and acne scars.

So, since we cannot avoid having dark spots, what's the best thing that we can do to reduce them?

We can use dark spot corrector products. Just make sure that the product contains one of the following.

  • 2% hydroquinone
  • Vitamin C
  • Retinoid
  • Glycolic Acid
  • Azelaic Acid
  • Kojic Acid

One product should not contain all of these ingredients as it may be too much for your skin to handle. 2 or 3 of these ingredients in a product will do. Make sure also that it does not contain more than 2% of hydroquinone because that will be very harmful to your skin.

And, the key for an effective Dark spot Treatment? Is by using Sunscreen! it also helps to prevent the new formation of dark spots and helps treat the existing ones.

Your sunscreen should be SPF 30+, contain one or both of these active ingredients (titanium dioxide, zinc oxide), and be non-comedogenic for people who have oily skin.

Remember that treating a dark spot takes a lot of patience. No product can get rid of or reduce your dark spot overnight. So make sure to be consistent when using a certain product to treat your dark spots.
