What You Should Know About Acne?

Did you know that there are different types of acne? These types of acne are not the same.

And what exactly is Acne?

It occurs when hair follicles and pores are compacted with oil (also called sebum), dead skin cells, and bacteria that inflame and irritate the skin. Acne starts to appear mostly during our teenage years. Some say it can be experienced from the age of 12 until the age of 24 however it may occur in later life.

Here are the different types of Acne:

1. Blackheads

This is caused by the build-up of dead skin cells and sebum in open pores. The black dots that appear on our face is the result of the outer layer being open and the rest being clogged.

It can appear on your Face, Back, Chest, Neck, Arm, and Shoulders. It is considered a mild form of acne and can be treated for 6 to 8 weeks.

Treatment:
Salicylic Acid, Benzoyl Peroxide, and Retinoids

2. Whiteheads

This one frequently appears on the area that is oily like the nose, forehead, and chin areas or also known as T-zone Are. Same as blackheads it is formed due to clogged pores caused by sebum and dead skin cells. The only difference is that the outer layer is close that's why it appears to be white.

Treatment:
Salicylic Acid, Benzoyl Peroxide, and Retinoids

3. Acne Papules ( Pimples)

This is formed when a hair follicle's wall is ruptured making it easier for the bacteria to enter the dermis that causes inflammation and red bump (pimple). Most of the time, it appears on our face but it can also appear on the different parts of our bodies.

Treatment:
A dermatologist may prescribe Benzoyl Peroxide, Topical Retinoids, and antibiotics. Make sure to consult your dermatologist before taking any medication.

4. Pustules

This type of acne is a blemish with an obvious white bump at the top or head that contains pus, oil, and dead skin cells. They can develop on the face, back, neck, and shoulders.

Treatment:
A dermatologist may prescribe an antibiotic to get rid of the pus. Some OTC treatments are Benzoyl Peroxide and Topical Retinoids. And a friendly reminder- Do not pop the pustules because it will cause the bacteria to spread.

5. Nodules

This one is a type of pimple that is buried in the skin and it is considered a severe form of acne because it appears to be large, inflamed, and painful breakouts. It does appear on the face, chest, and back.

Treatment:
A dermatologist will be able to help you get rid of this acne as they can prescribe specific medications and treatments. If medications don't work a dermatologist can drain the nodules by hand or use a laser or chemical peel.

6. Cyst

This is the most severe and painful type of Acne. it is filled with pus and blood and often leads to scarring. The cyst lies deep within the skin and occurs when the pores become blocked and swollen. It appears mostly on the face, chest, neck, back, and arms. Most of the time this is caused by hormones in women.

Treatment:
A Dermatologist can definitely help you treat Cystic Acne because this is the most difficult type of acne to treat. Medications like isotretinoin, antibiotics, topical retinoids, and spironolactone.

Having acne can be really frustrating that's why to avoid having one make sure to your daily skincare routine no matter what and always consult a dermatologist for severe type of acne.
